On Nov. 1, the largest cuts in the history of our country’s food stamp program, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, went into effect when the increase ordained by the 2009 economic stimulus package expired. Stephan: Ronlyn tells me that when we moved to Whidbey Island and she volunteered to be a baker for Whidbey Island Nourishes (WIN), the program that feeds children on the island, she was baking for 60 kids. The next year it was 200, the year after 240. Today is it 360 children who depend on the lunches and healthy treats Ronlyn and the other women make. That's one small island. The situation about food in the U.S. is reaching appalling proportions and the recent cut in the SNAP program forced on the country by the Right, I think, is one of the most immoral things done by policy makers in our history. There are states in this country, particularly the Theocratic Rightist states, that now have a third world quality of life. Here is that truth. It should make all of us ashamed that this now defines the United States.
