I was fortunate to play a small part in a new study, just published in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, which shows that the Earth broke yet another heat record last year. Twenty-three scientists from around the world teamed up to analyze thousands of temperature measurements taken throughout the world’s oceans. The measurements, taken at least 2,000 meters (about 6,500ft) deep and spread across the globe, paint a clear picture: the Earth is warming, humans are the culprit, and the warming will continue indefinitely until we collectively take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.I’m a climate scientist. We used measurements from the oceans because they are absorbing the vast majority of the heat associated with global warming. In fact, more than 90% of global warming heat ends up in the oceans. I like to say that “global warming […]
I’m going to sound a bit simplistic, but this is the reason so many younger people I know don’t have an ounce of respect for Biden. Being the ones who are slated to live or die through the worst of climate change, they expected, hoped more, even though at the back of their minds Biden was not going to be or do what’s needed re climate. They see him as generationally challenged/blinded. And lacking in boldness up until the last 2 days. And, I, for one, have to agree. These are, in essence, bold times that call for bold leaders. Biden tends to appease, hoping to find a way to meet when the opposition is not of the same mind. Not even a little bit. In that sense, the whole gestalt echoes Obama and his time in office. The GOP is acting out of fear by installing egregious voting laws. Trump is crazier by the day and by his actions and accusations is tearing down what’s left of his following. Manchin is going to ‘get his.’ WVa is economically poor and Manchin is a blatant symbol of the rich overlord. The coal union is upset with him for not supporting legislation that’s sorely needed re health and childcare. I believe Biden is going to gain ground if he meets with success re the filibuster. ‘Nuff said.
How much of the ocean’s temperature can be attributed to the ocean vents releasing hot water from below? We seem to have an uptake in volcanic activity and earthquakes on land which might also be reflected in events on the ocean floor, especially since temperatures in different oceans are different.
I agree with you, Stephan.
