Six Republicans on the Supreme Court just announced—a story that has largely flown under the nation’s political radar—that they’ll consider pre-rigging the presidential election of 2024.
Republican strategists are gaming out which states have Republican legislatures willing to override the votes of their people to win the White House for the Republican candidate.
Here’s how one aspect of it could work out, if they go along with the GOP’s arguments that will be before the Court this October:
It’s November, 2024, and the presidential race between Biden and DeSantis has been tabulated by the states and called by the networks. Biden won 84,355,740 votes to DeSantis’ 77,366,412, clearly carrying the popular vote.
But the popular vote isn’t enough: George W. Bush lost to Al Gore by a half-million votes and Donald Trump lost to Hillary Clinton by 3 million votes but both ended up in the White House. What matters is the Electoral College vote, and that looks good for Biden, too.
As CNN is reporting, the outcome is a virtual clone of the 2020 election: Biden carries the same […]
Seems most people think we live in a democracy. Sorry, from the beginning, we were a republic with tremendous powers given to small elites.
Consider the disproportionate power of Senators as related to their represented population base and that our “founding fathers” originally caused them to be appointed, not elected, or that the Supreme Court is appointed, sits for life and seemingly is empowered to rule by fiat on the constitutionality of every law.
Fact based analysis today would indicate we are an oligarchy of the wealthy verging on an anocracy.
I agree with you Dariel. We have been an “Oligarchy” for a long time now.
I agree! Jefferson didn’t even write the first paragraph of the Declaration. That was written by the attorney Mason who went home after the founding fathers refused to release their slaves…That said, it was an extraordinary vision/document….
This is probably the most important political piece you have posted. My developing sense of impending doom re the Republic over the last 7 years has crossed over into sadness and fatalism as the inevitability of what’s described here just gets clearer and clearer. That people think this is going to be some kind of clean transition, a temporary bump in the road in their complacent lives, is going to be shattered as it was for German Jews in the 1930s and then all Germans by 1945. The global repercussions of the US as semi-failed state while this plays out will be just as bad and together the combined risks and fallout (pun intended) could well be the worst imaginable. Short term greed will have its triumphal day and who knows if there will be any after that.
As state legislatures and the Congress have become less and less representative of the population as a whole trust in government has declined. This is a process which has been on-going for decades. This is most evident in the far left and far right but has been an undercurrent manifested in the decline of voter participation overall. Still the elites have wanted to maintain the veneer of legitimacy, which has required increased control of the media, and persecution of journalists such as Julian Assange. This project has been supported by the duopoly over the decades. If the Supreme Court endorses the concept of the “Sovereign Legislature” it will signal to the population that the elites have abandoned the need for even this veneer. With a system as corrupt as ours who will defend it?
