More millennials think referring to a transgender person by the wrong pronouns should be a criminal offense than think it should be legal, according to new polling conducted exclusively for Newsweek.
According to the survey by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, 44 percent of those aged 25-34 think “referring to someone by the wrong gender pronoun (he/him, she/her) should be a criminal offense,” versus just 31 percent who disagree. The remainder “neither agree nor disagree” or “don’t know.”

Even as a very democratic leaning millennial with a transgender sibling, I find this trend deeply disturbing. The idea that such a large percent of people in my age bracket lack the emotional resilience to handle minor insults to their sense of being, even to the point of thinking that criminalizing freedom of speech is a good idea just because it hurts someone’s feelings. Everything in life risks hurting someone’s feelings, the response shouldn’t be to reduce the rights of everyone else who doesn’t share the same views as the person who was insulted.
We are unable to successfully prosecute war crimes and financial crimes in this society. So the millennials want to prosecute freedom of speech? Our prognosis is poor.
