An Ohio woman who had sought treatment at a hospital before suffering a miscarriage and passing her nonviable fetus in her bathroom now faces a criminal charge, her attorney told CNN.
Brittany Watts, 33, of Warren, has been charged with felony abuse of a corpse, Trumbull County court records show.
“Ms. Watts suffered a tragic and dangerous miscarriage that jeopardized her own life. Rather than focusing on healing physically and emotionally, she was arrested and charged with a felony,” her attorney, Traci Timko, told CNN in an email.
“Ms. Watts’ case is pending before the Trumbull County Grand Jury. I have advised her not to speak publicly until the criminal matter has resolved.”
Though a coroner’s office report said the fetus was not viable and had died in the womb, Watts’ case highlights the extent to which prosecutors can charge a woman whose pregnancy has ended – whether by abortion or miscarriage.
After last year’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade and the federal right to an abortion, a host of state trigger laws went into effect across the country that placed new restrictions […]
Can’t help thinking this backlash, this diminisingof women is a result of the movement of women rising starting with the Trump inauguration. That these events are rage and fear based due to the enormous energy shift with women beginning to move into paoer in greater numbers. And it will turn around. The majority of Gen Z are outliers when it comes to this kind of behavior which is a result of enormous social shifts, economic and group actions in relation to age. Think Greta Thunberg who has been a major influencer. Women are breaking barriers in science, AI, in the environment and climate change and despite being challenged by the past, ie men who hold power in science, over women’s bodies, etc.And then there are a great many in congress who are male mental dinosaurs. As I write this, am wondering if there shouldn’t be science based study of generational mindsets that would then set parameters that would pave the way for this shift.Re educating, testing on a regular basis.
Let’s be real about this—–she was BLACK! We have so much prejudice in this country that it’s sickening. She did absolutely nothing wrong and I hope there’s a way to sue a state or a city for harming HER!!!! Also, it was not a viable fetus.
