As the Group of Seven summit wrapped up Friday in Italy, climate defenders condemned G7 leaders for their continued failure to take meaningful action to combat the worsening planetary emergency.
Taking aim at what critics called the G7 leaders’ largely empty pledge to undertake “concrete steps to address the triple crisis of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss,” 350.org U.S. campaigns manager Candice Fortin lamented that “yet another meeting ends without real commitments to revert the situation rich countries like the U.S. put us in.”
“As COP29 approaches and the world deals with worsening climate impacts, we can’t afford to waste more time,” Fortin said, referring to the United Nations Climate Change Conference scheduled to take place in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan—a major fossil fuel-producing nation—in November. Have to wonder how many of the public know the true story of the billionaires who continue to profit from fossil fuels. I realize that there are some big challenges when it comes to oil and gas in relation to cars. The place where public transpo thrives is Europe and in some S. American countries.
The public transport system in the US has been lagging behind for decades. Americans love their cars and, for the most part are unwilling to look at alternatives. Plus cars with alternative systems tend to be very expensive. I worked for Kaiser Permanente in LA and they had fantastic transpo system available to their employees. Big luxury vans. Individual outlets for music and computer stations. And transport for short distances during the working day. As you’ve also lived in LA, you know what a nightmare driving is. And public transport, ie buses are not the most reliable. That said, the city has been working on solutions that appeal to the public. Qualifying LA County residents can enjoy 20 free rides every month on Metro or a discounted pass on another participating transit agency. Ridership rose by close to 12 percent last year. That said, from what I’m hearing and reading, there are ongoing safety issues. Public transport on the East coast tends to be much better and has larger numbers of passengers.
