Stephan: I live in a rural area. We have one civilian hospital on the island, which we own as a community. About five years ago a big hospital corporation wanted to buy it. Just the kind of thing described in this article. We had a big public debate on the subject. I was against the sale and it didn't happen, and everyone is now very happy it didn't, because if it had it would almost certainly have meant the closing of the hospital. It's too small to be really profitable. Having our hospital and an excellent EMT operation makes a big difference to those of us who live out here, and certainly me. I feel very sorry for the communities described in this piece.
The closing of American rural hospitals is just another example of profit over wellness. Other countries are building hospitals, and expanding the medical safety net in everything from prenatal care to end-of-life care. In the U.S. as this sad story explains the Illness Profit System is closing hospitals. We also need an additional 58,000 primary care physicians. There are large parts of the rural U.S. where there is only one doctor, or none at all. As a society our obsession that profit is the only thing that matters, is leading to self-mutilate.

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — The rooms in the intensive care unit are filled with folded-up walkers and moving boxes. In the lobby, plaques and portraits have been taken off the wall. By this weekend, the last patients will be discharged and Mercy Hospital Independence will close, joining dozens of rural hospitals around the country that have not been able to withstand the financial and demographic challenges buffeting them.
The hospital and its outpatient clinics, owned by the Mercy health care system in St. Louis, was where people in this city of 9,000 turned for everything from sore throats to emergency treatment after a car crash. Now, many say they are […]
Don’t forget Stephan, we live in an Empire now, not a Nation. America “the Nation” was once a good place to live in. America “the Empire” will get bigger and bigger and worse and worse until it collapses from it’s own weight. We all must fight against the Empire. By the way, I finally got your new book and can’t wait to read it. I hope I can learn how to destroy the “American Empire” before it destroys us all from reading your highly praised book: “8 Laws Of Change”. Everyone should order it. I’ve just begun reading it and already know it will be a helpful book for those who want to bring peace back to the world.
